Chapter 7: Discipline

What does this information on discipline and students in poverty mean in the school setting?

  1. First and foremost, children have to understand there are two sets of rules. Street rules are different from school rules. We need to help the students understand that a behavior that may get them what they want outside of school is not necessarily going to work at school. It is up to us to teach them the difference and to know how they are going to respond to our demands. Instead of demanding a behavior, give choices. The students should be more willing to cooperate if he or she feels they have a say in the matter. If the child is playing the role as the adult at home, when we discipline them in our firm parent voice they feel threatened and will more than likely react with anger. Offering choices helps the child to feel like they have a say in the situation which will hopefully lead to cooperation from the student.

  2. The chart on page 79 and 80 were a great help to me. I could picture the response of a few students each time I corrected their behavior. The "Behavior Related to Poverty" often matched the child's reaction to classroom discipline. The Intervention section offers good choices in helping me to understand the child's thoughts and better ways to work with my studnets.

  3. It was pretty amazing to read the chart on pages 79 and 80. These are mirrored behaviors of some of our 4th graders. It gave me new insight on how to intervene with them about their behavior. I also enjoyed reading about the 3 voices. I didnt realize that many of the students that we teach are "parents" and should not be talked to in a "parent" voice. They are placed in "adult" situations at home, all the time. They want to be talked to as an adult, even if they are not acting like an adult in MY way of thinking.

  4. The quote that says that "many of the behaviors that students bring to school are necessary to help them survive outside of school" really made me think. The chart on pages on 79 and 80 was also very helpful and gave me new ideas on how to better work with my students. As teachers it is our responsibility to help them to understand that there are certain rules that must be follwed at school and those rules may be different from their rules outside of school.
